Beware! I might not be armed, but I’m dangerous. I’m just back from a Krav Maga class.
It is the official self-defence system of the Israeli Defence Forces. It emphasises instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios. It might be the domain of bodyguards and elite military units, but it’s relevant for every person on the street. Vicky Kapoor, CEO, Ultimate Tactical and Combat Ltd and the pioneer of Krav Maga in India, looks me in the eye and asks, “Are you safe when you are walking, talking, sleeping, sitting?” I hear myself mumble “No”. “That’s why you need to know this form of self defence,” he retorts, removing the rings on his finger, with his teeth.

Krav Maga is a form of martial art that is based on our natural behaviour and reflexes. Traditional forms of martial arts use age-old methods, whereas the strength of Krav Maga lies in the fact that it is a very contemporary and practical form of self defence. These days, no one really uses a sword to fight. If one is attacked in Delhi, the most likely weapons used would be bamboo sticks, knives or pistols. We teach self defence against such attacks. That aside, Krav Maga incorporates new age defences like anti-carjacking, anti-kidnapping & anti-sabotage. Since this art was developed by the Israeli military for themselves, the fitness benefits offered by it are tremendous. The workout includes power drills, cardio vascular coordination, stamina & endurance building exercises.

ISRAEL’S ARMS sales may capture the headlines, but they aren’t the nation’s only export to India. In south Delhi’s upscale Saket neighbourhood, a small but growing number of residents are learning Krav Maga, the hand-to-hand combat system of the Israeli Defence Forces. A big man with a gruff demeanor, Vicky Kapoor is the one responsible for bringing Krav Maga to India. He describes the martial art in clipped phrases: “Combat fighting — a system which is quick — easily retained.” Kapoor himself came to Krav Maga after decades of experience in karate, judo, and other martial arts. “What I saw was that krav maga is the most practical self-defence system,” he says.

There are no second chances in real life. Concentrate on your moves,” Avi Moyal barks out as one of the students, practising in the mirrored basement of the Krav Maga centre at Saket, misses a chop. It’s part of the 42-year-old Israeli’s annual visit to the Capital to instruct enthusiasts about the techniques of the close combat that has now garnered a huge following in India.
